Meet the Teacher
The Grow English teacher, Joan Pougiales, M.A (Linguistics/TESL), Ph.D., has received extensive training in teaching English as a Second Language, and has been an ESL teacher for over 30 years, teaching English for the workplace since 1985. She has taught everything from zero level English for adult immigrant and refugee students to high level English for students entering college in the U.S. She especially enjoys teaching low-level students and creating curricula that meet their specific needs. She has taught at the University of Minnesota, the University of Oregon, the Intensive English Language Institute at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, the Minneapolis Adult Basic and Continuing Education - ESL Program, Tacoma Community College and Community House ESL Program, and several other adult education programs in the U.S. She has also delivered ESL teacher training in a series of statewide workshops for the Minnesota Literacy Council. Her students have come from all over the world:
• AFRICA: Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Liberia, Libya
• ASIA: Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Korea, The PRC, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia, India, Thailand
• THE MIDDLE EAST: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, Egypt
• EUROPE: France, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, Romania
